Coming On Fall

Some time you don’t get what you want, but what you needed was right there in front of you all the time.

If you read me at all you cannot miss it. It is a category and tag in my drop-down menu. Yesterday I went to my local garden center, the trunk of my car overlayed with plastic, girl scout ready to load up with a flat of It; Blazing Color, more precisely, Ornamental Cabbages-a wonder and majesty of Fall.

Back at home the containers stood empty, soil, Quick Start, frustrating hose all untangled, spades at attention and gloves cleaned. I was prepared to redo for fall.

With anticipation and joy in my heart, I met the mistress of plants, my trusted “Queen of Pots”. You can imagine the depth of despair when she gave me the cabbage calendar. OMG! I was too early. My Blazing Color would not arrive for six more weeks! Seeing the utter dismay and sorrow on my face, she attempted to steer me to the monotonous mums.

Untempted, I meandered through the succulents, found a lovely trailing, twisted pink Philodendron not unlike ones my grandmother misted with her tiny copper can. Shuffling back toward my car, the perfect hand-made and paint-dripped clay pot caught my eye for the pink lady. Happily checking out, a group of ruby-red hens and chicks found their way to my arms and off home we went.

At home with no real potting to speak of necessary, I began to plunder about and re-arrange. Pushed back into a corner of the patio I noticed a quite large pot containing fragrant lavender nearly grown into a tree and overrun with wandering jew. After picking and pruning it a bit, I saw it was quite a beauty. I paired it up with the ruby-red chick pot, placed her majesty, Philodendron close by and was

dazzled with the color and fragrant beauty. Not quite blazing color. Cabbages can wait. For now it’s coming on Fall.
